World Environment Day for a planet ‘free of plastic pollution’
This year, World Environment Day calls on the population to reduce the amount of plastic they use and its negative impact on our planet, especially the oceans.
Under the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, the campaign warns that each year 8 million tonnes of this material are dumped into the oceans, threatening sea and human life and destroying natural ecosystems.
World Environment Day gives everyone the chance to reflect and act, starting with small changes in daily habits and behaviour. In particular, companies and government bodies responsible for the issue are being called on to help conserve and improve the environment.
For this reason, the Las Torres de Cotillas Town Council organised a public awareness day, attended by the councillor for the area, Inmaculada Fernández, on the importance of correct waste disposal to protect the environment
Mayor Isabel María Zapata explained that the event was above all a great day of activities to celebrate World Environment Day to the full, especially for young children, as they could take part in recycling workshops, photocalls on the theme of refuse, awareness-raising activities on climate change, games and giving out seasonal flowers.
Hidrogea took part in the environmental education workshops with experiments related to water and the awareness-raising campaign ‘The Value of Water’, in which glass bottles were handed out to help reduce the impact of plastic on our environment.
To end the day, experts from the Town Council, Marina Martínez and Bartolo Gómez, accompanied by Hidrogea Area Manager Inmaculada Serrano, visited the ONDA 92 Radio Cotillas radio station to talk about the event.
