The campaign for sustainable water use, ‘The Value of Water’, was launched at the Torre Pacheco Town Council Chamber at an event chaired by the Mayor of the town, Antonio León, accompanied by Hidrogea General Manager Inmaculada Serrano, members of the Municipal Corporation and local groups, associations and residents, who showed their interest, awareness and sensitivity with regard to reducing water consumption.

Each inhabitant of Torre Pacheco consumes 162 litres a day, already a very positive figure, as it represents a dramatic decrease in consumption since 2006, from 255 litres per inhabitant per day to 162 litres, a drop of 36%. Despite the encouraging figures, both company and municipal managers are investing in ongoing education and training to ensure public water use is as sustainable as possible.

‘The Value of Water’ is a highly visual campaign that aims to raise awareness among users of the amount of water they use in such common daily activities as washing the dishes, brushing their teeth, having a shower or flushing the toilet. To do this, the campaign encourages people to think in terms of bottles, as leaving the tap on for a few minutes is not the same as knowing they used 15 1-litre bottles of water during this time.

Inmaculada Serrano, Hidrogea General Manager, explained that ‘we are all responsible for the future, and the future lies in our hands every day. As the campaign says, let’s not forget that the most extraordinary water comes from our own tap, so it is our duty as a company to educate children and inform the public so that through their collaboration not a single drop of water is wasted’..

For his part, the town’s mayor stressed ‘the capacity of the town’s residents to save on water consumption, both in farming and the home, highlighting once again the need to avoid wasting such a necessary resource for economic development and future generations’.

Attending the event was Pau Elías, a percussionist who gave a performance on glass bottles, the symbol of the campaign, which were then handed out among attendees.
